HAPPY NEW YEAR to all my readers.
Who doesn’t have a dream of enjoying a vacation without worrying about expenses?
This dream of our’s came true this New Year.
Enjoying a sweet and beautiful vacation requires one to be smarter. You need to have the right set of tools to pre-calculate expenses and smartly reduce it.
We were able to save more than 50% on our vacation this year.
I would say Bengaluru has the best choices for weekend getaways. There is a host of options to choose from – Check out Weekend getaways near Bengaluru.
It was decided on December 27th, 2016 that We will celebrate New Year in Wayanad, Kerala.
So, I would rather say the whole vacation was unplanned.
3 Days and 2 Nights were our vacation plan.
Wayanad is located in north-eastern part of Kerala in Western-Ghats.
You can find more info in Wiki.
New Way of Enjoying your vacation with little Expenses:
We were a group of 7 people who were travelling to Wayanad from Bengaluru.
Total Distance from Bengaluru to Wayanad is around 280 km.
So let me go through the expenses that we had incurred and how we were able to save on most of it.
#1) Travelling from Bengaluru to Wayanad:
We had several options to travel from Bengaluru to Wayanad.
let me go through options we had:
- Travel by Bus
- Hire a Self Drive car to accommodate all 7 People
- Drive in our own car.
On New Year’s eve, the first two options were in demand.
The average fare for an individual in RedBus was 1400 INR. If we take into account the fare for the return journey, it was 2800 INR.
So, Travel Expense by RedBus = 7 * 2800 = 19,600 INR.
Don’t you think 19,600 was pretty high?
We were looking for an SUV to accommodate all 7 of us. But fare was sky rocket. They were charging around 30,000 INR for 3 days.
Final decision went with driving in our own hatchbacks.
To our surprise, when we calculated the fuel expenses, it turned out to be a lot cheaper.
We had a diesel and a petrol variant of Maruti Swift and Volkswagen Polo respectively –
Swift Diesel – 3000 INR
Polo Petrol – 3900 INR
Total Fuel Expenses = 3000 + 3900 = 6900 INR.
I used Debit Card for fuel expenses for which we received 0.75% cashback as well. If I had it planned, I could have still saved it by using some credit cards to earn a cashback or reward point.
Hopefully, I will not repeat this mistake next time.
#2) Accommodation in Wayanad, Kerala:
We looked for accommodation in sites like MakeMyTrip, Yatra, GoIbibo, RedBus, Booking.com.
But again due to New year’s eve, it was pretty expensive.
The average cost of a single room for 2 adults was not less than 7000 in a decent hotel.
We had heard a lot about Airbnb and we decided to check it out.
One more surprise was waiting for us.
We found a 2 BHK apartment for just 9700 INR for 2 nights and 3 days. We immediately grabbed it.
WHAT MORE CAN WE EXPECT?
This apartment had all the facilities – GYM, Swimming Pool, Kitchen with all utensils, 24 Hours Hot water.
I couldn’t have asked for more.
Total Cost for Hotel if not for Airbnb : 7000 * 2 = 14,000 INR
Total Cost for 2BHK in Airbnb: 9700 INR
So we saved a decent amount in Airbnb. You can also Join Airbnb now and get 1000 INR towards your first trip for free.
#3) Food Expenses:
In the three days of vacation, the expenses towards food and drinks were limited.
On an average, I would consider 1200 INR in a decent restaurant for a group of 7 people.
But we had some awesome chef’s in our group.
And big thanks to these people who helped us in reducing our bills.
Read this: Cost of Dining Outside
There were times when we were forced to have food outside. But we were trying to stick to our plan.
On average, I would say we saved food expenses 6 times.
So Total food expenses if we had not cooked = 1200 * 10 Times = 12,000 INR.
Actual expenses incurred on food:
Groceries including drinks, cake = 2500 INR
Food Expenses in Restaurant = 2000 INR
So, Total Actual Expenses towards Food = 2000 + 2500 = 4500 INR.
TOTAL SAVING DUE TO TRAVEL HACKS:
|Projected Expenses||Actual Expenses|
Expenses for Each Individual:
Projected expense without Travel Hack = 45600 / 7 = 6514 INR.
Actual expense Incurred = 21100 / 7 = 3014 INR.
We saved more than 50% which is just awesome.
Please share this post and help everyone to save more.
Happy Money Making and Money Saving.
